This September, the popular Jane Austen Tours of the Governor Gore mansion return. The theme for the tours will be The Art of Romance in the Austen Era. During these special tours of the beautiful 1806 mansion, a guide dressed in period clothing will use quotes from Austen's novels and letters and relate anecdotes about the triumphs and foibles of love in Austen's time. Come to the museum’s Holiday Prelude Celebration for 10 AM to 3 PM. Santa is sending his chief innovative elf to show you how his workshop operates and offer some great activities for families. His steampunk elves are here to help you make a engraved key chain or a Waltham Watch Company tree ornament. Type a letter on one of our vintage typewriters and put it in our special Santa express mailbox. Finally, the museum is filled with little elves just waiting to be found. he Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation hosts “i Sebastiani”, a traditional Commedia dell’Arte troupe. Commedia dell’Arte is a form of masked, improvised comedy that has been around for five centuries. Shakespeare loved it, Moliére stole from it, and i Sebastiani re-creates it, performing shows that evoke the spirit of renaissance Italy, with starry-eyed lovers, bombastic military men, half-witted servants, and manipulative parents. No script is used; the actors develop the show from a sketchy outline, which turns each performance into a high-energy roller coaster of unpredictable plot twists and dialogue.

An afternoon concert by WPO Chamber Players will be featured at The Tea Leaf as part of Waltham Holiday Prelude. Reservations required for tearoom service.

Speaker: Vivan Montgomery Because the piano was the primary vehicle for domestic music-making in 19th century America, women became a purchasing engine behind a growing musical industry. But, what was the place of women composers in the publication of solo piano music during this time? Why did people conceal and restrict the female composer’s identity? This talk will use a set of piano variation pieces composed within domestic music rooms by female pianist/ composers. Montgomery will show these women's ability to keep pace with the larger musical realm, despite an industry that guarded divisions between female and male participants. Speaker: Pnina Abir-Am In this lecture, I examine the efforts to reclaim the legacy of women scientists who worked on the atomic bomb but somehow did not make it into the public memory of this historical endeavor. I will review the “memoirs” of 1970s and 1980s under the impact of the women’s movement and inquire why the 50th anniversary of the atomic bomb in 1995 finally opened the way to interrogating the ongoing omission of women’s role in the “Project”. Do we have a moral obligation to remember those women scientists, especially if their omission from public memory continues to shape current debates on the under-representation of women in science. Speaker: Stephanie Wasserman Admirable foster mothers are an invaluable resource for understanding how to help traumatized children heal while in foster care. Qualitative analysis of twelve interview transcripts indicates that admirable foster moms actively promote the child’s developing attachment, convey a strong sense of agency or an attitude of “We can do this!” and model resilience though a variety of coping strategies that the foster child can observe and imitate. Eyewitness Phebe Emerson Ripley relates the horrors and excitement of the early days of the American Revolution and the trials faced by the women of Concord as the war dragged on music by Linda Abrams and Bob Phillips.

In this activity with the Newton Conservators, we will hopefully identify early spring migrants such as red winged blackbirds, tree swallows, and yellow warblers; winter ducks, including common mergansers and ring necked ducks; resident species cardinals, blue jays, and tufted titmice; and others: carolina wrens, red bellied woodpeckers and raptors.

Psychologists have called creativity “being in the flow,” but what is the nature of this flow and how does it relate to the experience of time while creating. Writers and artists from various disciplines will respond to this question from their own experience and their own work. Paul Revere's ride to warn the colonial militia of the British march on Lexington and Concord is a legendary contribution to the American Revolution. Midnight Ride, Industrial Dawn reveals another side of this American hero's life, that of a transformational entrepreneur instrumental in the industrial revolution.

Guitarist David Newsam will perform a concert of classical and contemporary music in the 1793 Carriage House at Gore Place. David will play a variety of stringed instruments including 6, 7, 8, and 10 string guitars!
