Noted Chef Creates Dinner at an Historic Farm
Sam Hunt is one of New England's top chefs. Formerly of Cambridge’s West Side Lounge, Mr. Hunt spent two years cooking with celebrity restaurateur Barbara Lynch (No. 9 Park, B. & G. Oysters and The Butcher Shop) and is now the Executive Chef at 15 Walnut Local Bistro in Hamilton. This September and October, Sam will be tantalizing taste-buds with full-course meals in the 1793 carriage house at Gore Place. Many of the ingredients will come straight from the estate's farm.

Across the country, eating food that is locally produced and in season is a growing trend. Self described "locavores" seek out fine food which is locally produced and artistically prepared. Top chefs are leading the charge and where good chefs go, "foodies" follow.

According to Chef Sam Hunt, "What excites me the most about cooking is when I have the opportunity to work directly with small independent farms like the one at The Gore Place. I find that farm mangers like Scott (Clarke of Gore Place) put just as much time and effort in to growing as I do cooking."

The Farm Dinners will be held on September 23 and October 14 at 7pm. Capacity is limited to 40 guests per dinner. Cost for dinner is $90 per person (wine included). The deadline for the September 23 dinner is September 13. The deadline for the October 14 dinner is October 4. Tickets are on sale now. To purchase tickets, call: (781) 894-2798 or email events@goreplace.org.

Gore Place is located at 52 Gore Street, just off Route 20 (Main Street) near the Waltham/Watertown line. For details, call (781) 894-2798 or visit the museum’s website at www.goreplace.org.

Romance in the Austen Era
Few writers of any era have written more insightfully or entertainingly on the subject of romantic love than has Jane Austen. This September, the popular Jane Austen Tours of the Governor Gore mansion return. The theme for the tours will be The Art of Romance in the Austen Era. During these special tours of the beautiful 1806 mansion, a guide dressed in period clothing will use quotes from Austen's novels and letters and relate anecdotes about the triumphs and foibles of love in Austen's time. The tour will be offered on Sunday, September 26 at 1 and 3pm. Admission for the tour is $12 adults, $8 children ages 5 to 12. Capacity limited. Advanced tickets suggested. To purchase tickets, call (781) 894-2798.

The English tradition of afternoon tea plays an important part in Austen's novels. Everyone attending the Jane Austen Tours will receive a discount at the Tea Leaf in Waltham. Reservations are required in advance for tea. Call (781) 891-1900.

The Time of Our Lives: An Exploration of the Fourth Dimension in Life and Literature
Speaker: Nancer Ballard Time is an essential component of memory, identity, hopes and fears. It is easily sensed, hard to define and beyond direct perception. Observations from philosophy, psychology, neurobiology and literature can guide us in understanding how our bodies and minds deal with time. And literary analysis reveals how female fiction and nonfiction writers use chronological, universal and historical time to create memorable stories.

Speakers: Ruth Lomon and Mary Hamill Two WSRC scholars - a visual artist (Mary Hamill) and a composer (Ruth Lomon) - will describe their work commissioned by the Abiquiu Music Festival in New Mexico, proceeding from Native American art. I Sebastiani at the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovaton
he Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation hosts “i Sebastiani”, a traditional Commedia dell’Arte troupe. Commedia dell’Arte is a form of masked, improvised comedy that has been around for five centuries. Shakespeare loved it, Moliére stole from it, and i Sebastiani re-creates it, performing shows that evoke the spirit of renaissance Italy, with starry-eyed lovers, bombastic military men, half-witted servants, and manipulative parents. No script is used; the actors develop the show from a sketchy outline, which turns each performance into a high-energy roller coaster of unpredictable plot twists and dialogue.

A Lady of Philadelphia, Mrs. Parkhurst, and Fanny Bell: Veiled Female Identity among Antebellum Piano Composers
Speaker: Vivan Montgomery Because the piano was the primary vehicle for domestic music-making in 19th century America, women became a purchasing engine behind a growing musical industry. But, what was the place of women composers in the publication of solo piano music during this time? Why did people conceal and restrict the female composer’s identity? This talk will use a set of piano variation pieces composed within domestic music rooms by female pianist/ composers. Montgomery will show these women's ability to keep pace with the larger musical realm, despite an industry that guarded divisions between female and male participants. Gender and the Ethics of Memory: Women Scientists of the Manhattan Project
Speaker: Pnina Abir-Am In this lecture, I examine the efforts to reclaim the legacy of women scientists who worked on the atomic bomb but somehow did not make it into the public memory of this historical endeavor. I will review the “memoirs” of 1970s and 1980s under the impact of the women’s movement and inquire why the 50th anniversary of the atomic bomb in 1995 finally opened the way to interrogating the ongoing omission of women’s role in the “Project”. Do we have a moral obligation to remember those women scientists, especially if their omission from public memory continues to shape current debates on the under-representation of women in science. Feminist Art: The Body Politic
Speaker: Elinor Gadon Feminist Art concerns the representation of the female body, a woman's body, our very source of power as women...ours to claim and celebrate. It is not just about the representation of the female, rather about its contextual meaning...in other words, about the place of a woman's body in the transformation of culture to become more just and compassionate. The Invisible Wounds of War
Speaker: Marguerite Bouvard Because less than one percent of our population is/was involved in the war in Iraq, most of the country has been cut off from the experiences of our soldiers. We are, thus, unaware of the psychological and emotional harm endured by our returning troops. This talk is neither for nor against the war, but is about the soldiers who have returned and what they face. My talk will draw from a book I am writing on this topic. How do admirable foster mothers provide nurturing foster care?
Speaker: Stephanie Wasserman Admirable foster mothers are an invaluable resource for understanding how to help traumatized children heal while in foster care. Qualitative analysis of twelve interview transcripts indicates that admirable foster moms actively promote the child’s developing attachment, convey a strong sense of agency or an attitude of “We can do this!” and model resilience though a variety of coping strategies that the foster child can observe and imitate. The Dire Fate of Boys
The Dire Fate of Boys Rosalind Chait Barnett Thursday, October 27, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. Scare stories about the fate of boys are proliferating in the media. We hear that they are falling behind, that their brains are so different from those of girls that they have to be taught in “boy-friendly” classes, that they are ill-equipped to comprehend major works of literature, that they are aggressive, unemotional, and even uncaring – all the things that girls are not. Are these stories based on fact or on stereotyped fictions? And does it matter? A Room of One's Own
A Room of One's Own Alexandra Borrie Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. Playing the role of Virginia Woolf, Alexandra Borrie will deliver a condensed version of several lectures, given to several womens' colleges in England during the mid 1920's and published under the now famous title A Room Of One's Own in 1929. Woolf herself describes the work as " a trifle...written with ardour and conviction". It is that and a good deal more, addressing a woman's need for money, time and a private space in which to create art. Abir-Am Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. This talk examines the overlapping careers of three women scientists by reflecting on how their careers and lives in science relate to the unfinished gender revolution of the 1970s, to each other, as well as to this historian author, who happens to share key biographical features with all three subjects. Two of these scientists are members of the first ever team of women Nobel Laureates in 2009 (for the discovery of telomerase and the role of telomeres in replication, aging, and cancer) while relating to each other as Ph.D. adviser and advisee. The third scientist was their predecessor, and actually the first woman to be hired in the Department of Molecular Biology at the University of California at Berkeley in the mid-1970s, prior to becoming part of the “leaking pipeline” of women in science. The essay concludes by highlighting the under-utilized synergy between the interests of wo/men scientists and wo/men historians in making both science and the world at large a more robust space of gender equality. Coming to America: Success and Failure in the First Generation of Filene's
Coming to America: Success and Failure in the First Generation of Filene's Ann W. Caldwell Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. Catherine (Kay) Filene Shouse (1896-1994) never knew economic hardship. She had money all her life, thanks to the spectacular success of her father Lincoln Filene, and her uncle Edward, at the Boston specialty store William Filene and Sons. But the Filene money and famous name only partially explain the drive, soaring ambition, and powerful search for meaning through philanthropy that Kay brought to her long life in Washington DC. In this early chapter of her biography, I explore how much the backdrop of failure, poverty and even bankruptcy of her immigrant grandparents fueled Kay's determination. Thresholds and Passages: Readings of New Poetry and Prose
The lecture begins at 12:00 p.m. with a musical interlude by Emily Corbató, followed by readings from our Scholars: Creative writer Nancer Ballard will read an excerpt from her memoir-in-progress, The Odd Direction Of Heaven, in which a young woman, struggling to make changes in her own life, tries to discover what makes people endure impossible situations. Together with the Colombian poet Clara Ronderos, Mary G. Berg, will read from recent collaborative translations of Ronderos' 2010 prize-winning collection Estaciones en exilio (Seasons in Exile). Emily Corbató will read “The Piano Lesson,” a short story about friendship, love of music and the relationship between a teacher and her student. Georgia Sassen will read five poems ranging from a humorous vilannelle to free verse reflecting on human connections and our relationship to the natural world. Rachel Munn will read from her poetry collection, Winter Street, A Year, which weaves themes of time in renovating a hundred year old farmhouse, raising young children and Jewish identity. Naomi Myrvaagnes will read from her novel in progress, The Third Street Temple, which explores Rabbi Felice Whitman's mission to inspire her congregants to commit to their Jewish heritage.

The complexities of balancing paid work, family roles and community responsibilities challenge every woman, with an added dimension when women also seek to promote social change. Work groups can provide both personal support and an effective setting to explore feminist models of leadership and consider how our work can lead to progressive change. Janet Freedman will outline ways to create a small work group within your field, or across occupations, and offer the audience a chance to exchange ideas with participants in one such group.

The Argument – A Fiction Reading
Rachel Kadish will read from her collection of short stories titled "The Argument" and invites discussion. Through a wide span of characters and voices, the stories, set in Israel and the U.S., pose questions about love, humor, and memory, Jewish and human identity. Is an argument a form of faith, or the end of faith? When and how does laughter outshout loss, beauty trump fear? In the aftermath of the Holocaust, is memory always a virtue? What, if anything, does a reparation claim repair?

On a Slippery Slope: The Medicalization of Grief
On a Slippery Slope: The Medicalization of Grief Phyllis Silverman Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 12:30 p.m. In the U.S. today, there is a movement to transform the normal life cycle experience of “grief following a death” into a psychiatric illness. This shift is part of the larger phenomenon of the medicalization of human experience. My presentation will illustrate how grief is framed increasingly in the language of illness and will discuss the consequences of this move. The following quote by famed sociologist Elliot Friedson will be my starting point: “A pathology arises …when the only legitimate spokesperson on an issue relevant to all must be someone who is officially certified” (1970). Ernestine L. Rose (1810-1892): Reclaiming Her Place in History
Ernestine L. Rose (1810-1892): Reclaiming Her Place in History Paula Doress-Worters Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 12:30 p.m. Rose was the first person to petition a state legislature in the U.S. for women's rights; the first to say, "Women's rights are human rights." In the 1830s before there was an organized women's movement, Rose became a mentor and colleague to Stanton and Anthony. As an immigrant, a Jew, and a freethinker, she was outside the predominantly American-born Protestants mainstream of reform movements. Nevertheless her eloquence, logic, and humor made her a valued leader. I will share initial successes of the Ernestine Rose Society and her increasing recognition following publication of my collection of her speeches and letters.
